Big Plans!!

This evening, we discussed and planned out quite a bit!

1. Summer Camp, July 11th-17th, Fire Mountain approx 9 boys attending

2. This Friday, Grill & Advance, bring food! 3:30pm, my house (call me for directions if needed)

3. (Revised!) Bogardus Campout; March 19th, meet at Scout house 3:30pm
(revised due to at least 4 guys not being able to attend on the 12th...)

4. Next meeting; patrol organization, names, calls, and food planning for aforementioned campout, bring boy's life mags to help planning merit badge months, counselors, and pamphlet pruchases...

Having gone home early again...

and after checking the weather forecast for the next couple of days, I decided to consult some of the guys about the feasibility of moving the advancement ceremony to another day within the next two weeks. This is my 6th day in a row being sick, and between the current forecast of both lower temperatures and heavy precipitation for the next 3 days straight, I think this would be in all of our best interests. feel free to email with with votes (after checking the weather forecast!) on when the next logical and convenient time during the next two weeks would be for us to get together.

My apologies, but I don't want to get any sicker, and don't really want any of you to get sick either.

Friday's Advancement Ceremony, and more...

Our next advancement ceremony will take place at my house (just a block behind the fairgrounds, call if you need directions.) The guys wanted to do something different, so this is "Grill & Advance" Ceremony! Bring whatever items you would like cooked on the grill, and prepare to be warmed in front of a large outdoor (but under a roof) fireplace.

Hopefully, everyone had a great Christmas break. We made about $235 dollars at the holiday market selling baked goods, our driftwood candelabra, and some tree decorations.

Just so everyone knows, we will be having a meeting tonight, Tues January 5th 2010!!

Fund Raising Efforts, part 2

So after we gathered together on Saturday the 14th to go 'get the green' (gather boughs to make holiday wreaths) we found out that the senior class was already selling holiday wreaths, and decided to do something else. The boys decided that they wanted to make driftwood candelabras, and so off to Jackson's Beach, and South Beach.

It was windy and cold, but we made the best of it, and brought about 30 nice pieces of driftwood back to the Scout House.

At our next meeting on the 17th, we worked on drilling, chiseling, dremeling, sanding, and otherwise constructing some of the candelabras.

next week, we hope to complete as many as possible, so the guys can take them out for sale!

We gathered at the Scout House on Saturday morning; we were all hoping for a bigger turn out. As we prepared, we figured out that the Senior Class was selling holiday wreaths, and decided to come up with a different product to sell. Corwin, Julian, Taylor, Bjorn and myself went first to Jackson's Beach, and then to South beach to gather driftwood for our project.

Service Project / Bogardus Overnight review

So, we met at noon on the 24th, and started at the Roche Harbor Reservoir Trailhead, hiking in and looking for trash and trail debris. We didn't find much at first, and I thought I had forgotten my camera. After getting into the DNR lands, we ran into our first downed tree. After a bit of creative thinking, we got it cleared, and moved on. Bjorn was a great help in leading us to trails that we might otherwise have bypassed; he has lived close to the property in question fro some time. The last time we did the hike, it took us a little under 2 hours to make it to camp. This time, it took us just over three hours, but we removed 5 trees from the path, clipped and trimmed other vegetation, and paused to let 4 horses with riders pass by. Stephen, Christian, Corwin, Julian, and Taylor accompanied Bjorn and myself on this portion of the campout.

After arriving at camp Adam showed up, followed shortly thereafter by Peregrin and Tom. We all pitched our tents, and folks started to work on building a fire and cooking dinner. Adam and Bjorn worked on the "magical floating hamburger that threatened to eat Manhattan."

Overall, excellent food, good company, and as I had been up since 3:30am, I wound up going to bed fairly early.

In the morning, I got a rare chance to sleep in a bit, and did not get up until 5:30 or so.

I wanted to be up in case anyone wanted help with breakfast, but no one was awake yet, so I sat and read until the sun started to come up. The sunrise was beautiful! Later, I woke Adam up to make sure he got to work on time, rode with him to the gate to let him out, and then walked back to camp. Slowly, the guys started getting up, making breakfast, and packing up camp.

All in all, an excellent trip, and we only got back 15 minutes late!!

Trail Service Project and Bogardus Overnight

Add this to your calendars guys!!

Bring: Raingear, food (individual cooking,) water (cooking and cleaning,) cooking utensils, a stove or other method to assure your ability to cook, overnight gear (tent, sleeping bag, etc,) ten essentials, and a spare garbage bag for trail trash... We will meet at the Scout house at noon on Saturday Oct 24, returning to the Scout house at approximately 9:30am Sunday Oct 25th. see you there!!

Sunday, and we are in Fire Mountain Scout Reservation...

Everybody is checked in, ran through the tour, and yay! we didn't have to do our swim check, as we completed it before we arrived at camp. The guys really liked that.

After dinner, there was an ice cream social, chapel, and opening campfire.
Then, off to bed.

This morning, getting folks up was easier than expected, and everyone had breakfast before heading off for the first classes of the day.

Getting Ready for Fire Mountain!!

I just added the Fire Mountain Scout Camp packing list to the widget on the right hand side of this column (it says Box.net in the lower right hand corner.) The file is called FM_packing_list.pdf If you can't see it, or have trouble opening it, I have copies at The Big Store. I will also bring them to our next meeting.

Be aware! Our next meeting is our last meeting before camp! Come with questions, your physicals, (making sure that the photo release page is signed!) and great camp spirit!

The boys and I would like to thank Dr. Gossam for his patience and generosity for providing free physicals for summer camp this past Friday. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Tuesday night, bring your swim trunks and a towel. We will be going to San Juan Fitness to do our Pre-Camp Swim Checks. (This of course means that we will not have to do them upon our arrival at camp, and can head to our campsite instead! We all know how much fun carrying all our gear to the beach is...)

The Kayaking Finale, July 4th, and preparation for Summer Camp...

The Kayaking trip to Turn Island went very well. We shaved 30% of our travel time on our return trip (confidence!) and returned most of the gear we had borrowed before the day was out. I will post pictures soon.

In preparation for Summer Camp, we will be having an Scout Free Physical Hour, offered by Dr. Burke Gossam of San Juan Healthcare Associates, on Friday July 3rd from 10:00 to 11:00am. Dr. Gossam has offered, for any and all Scouts who have their new medical forms filled out, to provide free physicals at this time. The new physical is annual, so get it while you can! The form is called new_physical.pdf, in the box.net widget to the right of this column, or you can drop by The Big Store, where I will have additional copies available for anyone who needs them.

We will be meeting at 10:am on Saturday July 4th, across the street from the interesection of Price and Spring streets. (The old Flying Burrito...) The parade starts at 10:30am; Class A uniforms for everyone who has one!!

We made it safely (with only two capsizings!) and are happily setting up camp on Turn Island. From our rate of travel to the island, we should arrive at Jackson's Beach at approximately 2:00pm on Sunday

the boy who czpsized is fine... Just a little cold until we made to the island.

Near-final plan for the Kayak Trip

Hey guys!
We will have 10 Kayaks (I am picking up 3 this afternoon with Bjern, and Taylor and Sharon are delivering 2 more early this afternoon); one is a tandem, and a chase boat. So, seats for 12.
Stephen, Corwin, Julian, Keith, Peregrine, Taylor, Josh, Nelson, Adam, Bjern, Tom, and I make 12.
This seems to work.
I have 11 PFD's in my car, and Tom is bringing 2 more.
Ditto.
So guys, don't forget water, food, sleeping gear, cooking gear, and anything else you want to bring. Also, remember plastic bags to pack stuff in so that it all stays dry. 10 Essentials!!

More details.... Kayaking, and our next meeting

Our next meeting, Tuesday June 23rd, will consist of finalizing our plans for our Kayaking trip this weekend.

So far, the plan looks like;

Meeting at Jackson's Beach at 8:000am on Saturday the 27th, and leaving the beach by approximately 8:15am
Spending the night on Turn Island
Leaving Turn island at noon on Sunday. (check back here after we arrive on Turn Island to find out our approximate return time. )

I will update the website from the island to let parents know how long it takes us to get there. I have not made this trip from Jackson's Beach before, and so I can only guess that we will take 45 minutes to an hour to get there. The departure and arrival times have been chosen to coincide with tidal changes, so that we are not fighting high currents. If there is any reason not to make the return trip, or we have any unforeseen problems, we will return on a different route, bringing us ashore at the end of Beach Access Road, off Turn Point Road. If this were neccesary, I would contact parents to let them know.

I am still trying to figure out a chase boat. My first two plans for such have fallen through, but I am actively pursuing two other alternates. If anyone has a small boat that could serve the purpose, (11-20ft, powered craft) feel free to email or call me!

who helped out with the San Juan Celebrity Golf Classic. Even though there were many events taking place this weekend, lots of folks came out to help. A big thank you goes out to Lynn Pearson, of Petro San Juan, who loaned us a big lift-gate flatbed truck to use moving the tables and chairs. It made our job much easier than it has been in the past.

See you all tonight! Please come to the meeting, or call me with your decision regarding attendance at Fire Mountain. (I need to pay our bill, and can do so as soon as I know how many of you are attending.)

Wow!

The setup for the Golf Classic went great! We were able
to borrow a large flatbed truck from Petro San Juan (thanks Lynn!) and only had to make two trips£ one with tables, and one with chairs. We had so many chairs loaded up that we had to bring some back to storage!
So, we will meet Sunday morming at 6:00am at the Scout house to take it all down...
